What It Really Takes to Begin a Life With God
Most people assume that knowing God requires doing more—more good deeds, more spiritual discipline, more self‑improvement. Others believe they need to “clean up” before God will accept them.
But the Bible paints a very different picture.
A relationship with God doesn’t begin with striving. It begins with receiving.
Below are four foundational truths—simple, powerful, and deeply personal—that explain how anyone can begin a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
1. God Loves You More Than You Realize
Before anything else, you need to know this: God loves you. Not the future version of you. Not the polished version of you. You—right now.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
Jesus didn’t come to make your life heavier. He came to make it full.
“I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.” — John 10:10
So why don’t most people experience that abundant life?
2. Our Sin Separates Us From God
We were created for relationship with God, but something broke that connection—sin. Not just the obvious wrongs, but the inward pull toward independence, pride, and self‑rule.
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
Sin creates a gap between us and God—a gap we try to bridge with good behavior, religion, philosophy, or self‑effort. But none of it reaches Him.
“The wages of sin is death.” — Romans 6:23
The gap is real. But God didn’t leave us stranded on our side of it.
3. Jesus Is God’s Bridge Back to Relationship
God’s solution wasn’t a system—it was a Savior.
Jesus stepped into our brokenness, took our place, and paid the penalty for our sin.
“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
And He didn’t stay dead.
“Christ died for our sins… He was buried… He was raised on the third day… He appeared to more than five hundred…” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–6
Jesus is not one of many ways back to God. He is the only way.
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” — John 14:6
Through Jesus, the gap is bridged. The invitation is open.
But knowing this isn’t enough.
4. You Must Personally Receive Jesus
A relationship with God isn’t automatic. It’s personal. It’s chosen.
“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12
You don’t earn salvation. You receive it—by faith.
“By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Jesus stands at the door of your life, waiting for your invitation.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…” — Revelation 3:20
Receiving Christ means turning from self‑rule and trusting Him to forgive, lead, and transform you. It’s not merely agreeing with facts or feeling emotional—it’s an act of the will.
A Simple Prayer to Begin
If you’re ready to begin a relationship with Jesus, you can do that right now. God isn’t looking for perfect words—He’s looking for an open heart.
Here’s a simple prayer you can make your own:
“Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of my life. Make me the person You want me to be.”
If this reflects the desire of your heart, pray it sincerely—and according to Scripture, Christ will enter your life.
And if you prayed that prayer, I’d love to hear from you. Reach out and let me know so I can encourage you in your next steps.
